BAS | Process 01 - Base Preparation

THE BURMADE WAY

STEP 01

Base Preparation

A PHU HTEL

A strong, true base is everything. We start with bamboo and hardwood, shape them into a single, seamless body, and only then begin the lacquer cycles. This quiet engineering keeps our pieces light, tough, and beautifully balanced.

Plaited Bamboo Coil Method

We create the core from bamboo. Typically, three or more strips are plaited (braided) or twisted together to form a sturdy, rope-like coil. This bamboo “rope” is then wound into the desired shape and stitched or bonded to hold form.

Woven Bamboo Method

We use very thin, pliable strips of bamboo and weave them into a pre-formed shell. The woven base is then shaped and coated with raw lacquer sap to begin the foundational sealing process.
